The Dreaded Reading Slump and how to get out of it

This Month I am not going to be posting a November wrap up. After reading one of my favorite books of the year, Legendborne. I hit the dreaded reading slump. I was able to evade this horrible phenomenon for the entire year before this, but it was no use, I was fully slumped.

In this article I want to talk about books that I think would definitely help horror lovers get out of a slump and the book that helped me!

The Year of the Witching

A great atmospheric read with a lot of spooky vibes and twists

"In the lands of Bethel, where the Prophet's word is law, Immanuelle Moore's very existence is blasphemy. Her mother’s union with an outsider of a different race cast her once-proud family into disgrace, so Immanuelle does her best to worship the Father, follow Holy Protocol, and lead a life of submission, devotion, and absolute conformity, like all the other women in the settlement.

But a mishap lures her into the forbidden Darkwood surrounding Bethel, where the first prophet once chased and killed four powerful witches. Their spirits are still lurking there, and they bestow a gift on Immanuelle: the journal of her dead mother, who Immanuelle is shocked to learn once sought sanctuary in the wood.

Fascinated by the secrets in the diary, Immanuelle finds herself struggling to understand how her mother could have consorted with the witches. But when she begins to learn grim truths about the Church and its history, she realizes the true threat to Bethel is its own darkness. And she starts to understand that if Bethel is to change, it must begin with her." Via Amazon

One of the Girls

A beachy summer horror about friendship, lies, and deadly secrets

"It was supposed to be the perfect weekend away. Six very different women travel to a sun-soaked Greek island for a bachelorette trip, to celebrate Lexi’s upcoming wedding. From the glorious ocean views to the quaint tavernas and whitewashed streets, the vacation seems too good to be true. But dangerous undercurrents run beneath the sunset swims and midnight cocktails – because each of the women is hiding a secret. Someone is determined to make sure that Lexi’s marriage never happens – and that one of them doesn’t leave the island alive.

Gripping, twisty, and full of sun-soaked suspense, this timely thriller examines the joys of female friendship…as well as the deadly consequences when a relationship goes wrong." Via Amazon

Into The Drowning Deep

Dive into the deepest parts of the ocean with unforgettable characters for the search of the truth. Did I mention killer mermaids?

"The ocean is home to many myths,

But some are deadly. . .

Seven years ago the Atargatis set off on a voyage to the Mariana Trench to film a mockumentary bringing to life ancient sea creatures of legend. It was lost at sea with all hands. Some have called it a hoax; others have called it a tragedy.

Now a new crew has been assembled. But this time they're not out to entertain. Some seek to validate their life's work. Some seek the greatest hunt of all. Some seek the truth. But for the ambitious young scientist Victoria Stewart this is a voyage to uncover the fate of the sister she lost.

Whatever the truth may be, it will only be found below the waves.

But the secrets of the deep come with a price." Via Amazon

Suburban Hell

A group of friends in a typical suburb get terrorized by a demon.

"Amy Foster considers herself lucky. After she left the city and moved to the suburbs, she found her place quickly with neighbors Liz, Jess, and Melissa, snarking together from the outskirts of the PTA crowd. One night during their monthly wine get-together, the crew concoct a plan for a clubhouse She Shed in Liz’s backyard—a space for just them, no spouses or kids allowed.

But the night after they christen the She Shed, things start to feel . . . off. They didn’t expect Liz’s little home-improvement project to release a demonic force that turns their quiet enclave into something out of a nightmare. And that’s before the homeowners’ association gets wind of it.

Even the calmest moms can’t justify the strange burn marks, self-moving dolls, and horrible smells surrounding their possessed friend, Liz. Together, Amy, Jess, and Melissa must fight the evil spirit to save Liz and the neighborhood . . . before the suburbs go completely to hell." Via Amazon

Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke

An extreme horror novella that will have you on the edge of your seat. I'll never eat an apple again.

"Sadomasochism. Obsession. Death.

A whirlpool of darkness churns at the heart of a macabre ballet between two lonely young women in an internet chat room in the early 2000s - a darkness that threatens to forever transform them once they finally succumb to their most horrific desires.

What have you done today to deserve your eye." Via Amazon

The Book That Got Me Out of this slump... The Hawthorn Legacy

Now this book isn't horror, but it is a mystery. The Hawthorn Legacy is the second book in the Inheritance Games trilogy, and it was so wonderful to be back in this world. It takes place directly after book one. The mystery was fun, the romance was steamy (for a YA) and the secondary characters were fleshed out and it felt like being back with old friends. Highly recommend this series for helping you get out of a slump.
