FantasticLand Review

Title: FantasticLand

Author: Mike Bockoven

Synopsis: "Since the 1970s, FantasticLand has been the theme park where “Fun is Guaranteed!” But when a hurricane ravages the Florida coast and isolates the park, the employees find it anything but fun. Five weeks later, the authorities who rescue the survivors encounter a scene of horror. Photos soon emerge online of heads on spikes outside of rides and viscera and human bones littering the gift shops, breaking records for hits, views, likes, clicks, and shares. How could a group of survivors, mostly teenagers, commit such terrible acts? FantasticLand is a modern take on Lord of the Flies meets Battle Royale that probes the consequences of a social civilization built online." - Good Reads

Review

This book was excellent, especially on audio!

FantasticLand hooked me by the premise alone. Hundreds of people, mostly teens, are entrusted to protect a theme park during a massive hurricane, and even before the storm doors can open, all hell has broken loose. People are killed, tribes are formed, and there are somehow working canons. This book is Lord of the Flies, but at a theme park just like Disneyland. All-in-all I loved this book.

What I loved

FantasticLand was told all in an interview format.

Each chapter of this book was an interview with a different person. I enjoyed this aspect because it gave us a well-rounded picture of the tragedies that happened in FantasticLand.

The story does not start slowly. It pulls you in instantly and keeps the action going till the final page.

This book should be consumed on audio if possible. Luke Daniels and Angela Dawe read it, and they tell the story in what seems like an entire cast! It made the book feel more natural and sucked me in even more.

While it is a five-star read for me, I want to add some things that people may not enjoy.

This book is brutal! It spares no details! If you do not read books with blood on every page, this book is not for you. This book is probably ten times more brutal than Lord of the flies, and the violence for most of the book is between teenagers. Now, if you like gory horror books, then I highly recommend this one!

If you like books that have a believable premise the entire way through, I would not recommend this book. However, if you want something insane but fun to read, this is the book for you! To enjoy this book, you should like reading about things that could probably never happen.
